Overwhelm: 6 Ways To Stop Feeling It!

Feeling overwhelmed and STUCK? Not sure where to from here? Let me hold your hand and walk you out…

Ok so not literally, but metaphorically. I’m going to give you your ticket to FREEDOM from overwhelm so sit down, relax and breathe because hey… that always helps!

For the sake of gaining maximum potential for growth from reading this article I want you bring to the front of your mind the word… EASE. Think about it. Imagine it. Feel it. Make friends with it. Ease is your new, healthy way of doing life from here on in!

Whether you are overwhelmed by work commitments, mum life, the daily grind or something else… there is another way forward. And it doesn’t involve wearing concrete shoes that make taking one step seem impossible. Your freedom from overwhelm is solution focused (NOT problem focussed!) It’s light. Conscious. And deliberate.

Ok here we go… Overwhelm: 6 Things You Can Do To Stop Feeling It!

Take a break

Seriously, SLOW DOWN! Are you trying to do all the things for all the people… all at once? Are you biting off more than you can chew? Or… are you setting ridiculously high bars for yourself to reach? Are you trying to meet other people’s standards? Stop trying to do it all and start showing up for yourself because… newsflash… YOU MATTER TOO!

Check In With Your Thoughts

No matter what is contributing to your feelings of overwhelm I want you to know, and believe, that nothing is inherently GOOD or BAD. Life isn’t black and white. In fact many would argue that life in fact happens, in the grey! So, remember that grey is ok. Chaos is ok. But getting through it is possible. Check in with the thoughts you are having because your thoughts alone determine your feelings. Scary thoughts = scary feelings. Overwhelming thoughts = overwhelming feelings. See what I mean? YOU aren’t “overwhelmed” your THOUGHTS are overwhelming you. And the good news – YOU control your thoughts, so it is possible to choose new ones that inspire you, rather than ones that keep you stuck.

Mind Mapping

Depending on what exactly is going on you may wish to pull out some paper and a pen and write it out! Thoughts, concerns, hopes, desired outcomes, people involved, constraints… anything that comes to mind. When it’s on paper and out of your head you create space between ‘it’ (the problem/s) and ‘you’. This space leads to less ‘noise’ (the internal chatter) and more ‘action’ (the cure for overwhelm). Consider this an exercise in good old brainstorming!

Reassess Obligations And Priorities

So much of what we do is habit based. We do what we’ve always done because our brains are lazy by design and like to stick to the familiar. Even at the expense of our mental health. So, get aware. Challenge the comfortable (which is actually making you seriously uncomfortable). Reassess what you need to do versus what you are telling yourself you have to do. There’s a big difference there… look for it!

Write Out Or Talk Out Your Options

Progressing on from the mind mapping and now knowing you have your obligations and priorities in check…. It’s time to write out or talk out your options. Pull forward your problems and some solutions then align them. Play out options A/B/C/D if you have them. By applying logic (not emotion!) work though the issues and consider what will work best going forward. What can you cull? What can be changed or improved? What matters and what actually doesn’t? By writing things down or talking them through you are rewiring your brain for action and empowerment and removing the temptation to slip back into overwhelm induced ‘victimhood’. Remember… a problem shared (with the right person!) is a problem halved so don’t go it alone if you don’t want to.

Wait and breathe!

Whatever it is… sleep on it. Have a day off thinking, overthinking, worrying, planning or stressing. Use the day to find and hold onto peace. Rest. Rejuvenate and focus on your word… EASE. When we think with ease, we take action with ease and we avoid catastrophising and overwhelming ourselves again. Today is your day to regroup. Refoucs and realign. And tomorrow… tomorrow is your day to start fresh. To take action on whatever you decided would make your life better. Or less overwhelming. Or EASIER.

So there you have it… Overwhelm: 6 Things You Can Do To Stop Feeling It!
