How do YOU look after yourself?

I was recently invited to speak at a local event as part of NSW Women’s Week. What an absolute honour it was! The event was run for women, specifically Mums and Carers, and revolved around relaxation and nurturing. The women took time out of their busy lives to attend several mini workshops including Yoga, Mindfulness with Colour, Journaling and a Women’s Health Tips ‘n’ Tricks session presented by me!

It was a fabulous day which reminded all those who attended just how worthy they are of recognition for the roles they play in society as Mums and Carers. It reminded them of the value of self-care and the importance of taking time for themselves, regularly.

I thought I’d share with you the content I presented, so these are my 5 tips to achieving better health and wellness for Mums and Carers. Enjoy!

1. Stop…

That is, take a moment to be no one for anyone except YOU! Let go of expectations. Get a breath of fresh air, relax your shoulders and let tension go! Enjoy a moment of silence doing absolutely NOTHING, breathe and quieten your chattering mind. Listen to your body… feel like you need a shower? A cuppa? A chat with a friend? A walk? DO IT!    REMEMBER; “You can’t pour from an empty cup”...

2. Don't find time, make time...

This one seems so cliché but it’s true! We make time for EVERYONE else (meals, parties, homework, driving here there and everywhere, shopping etc) but what about us? Do we stop having needs and RIGHTS just because we become responsible for little people? NO! Where possible, schedule in your self-care activities like you would a Doctor’s appointment or a tennis lesson otherwise you’ll fill your day with everything else and wonder why you’re burnt out.

3. Maintain an attitude of gratitude…

This one will literally change your world, if you let it! It’s so easy to forget what’s right here in front of us. We tend to focus on everything we DON’T have or everything we think we SHOULD have instead of all we DO have. When you appreciate the small things in life – running water, a hot shower, PEACE, friendships, nature and more... your heart softens and your mind relaxes. You might like to try a Gratitude Diary! You could write down 3 things you are grateful for each day and revisit the diary when you’re feeling flat.

4. Live your life, not Instagram's or Hallmark's…

This seems silly but it’s a thing, really! Many cases of Anxiety and Depression stem from trying to live up to the expectations, pressures, ideals and BELIEFS of others! Remain committed to doing life YOUR way. Don’t let anyone tell you what you ‘should’ eat, drive, weigh, wear, think, want, have or BE! You and your family are unique and THAT is what should be celebrated. Remember this social media inspired quote; “Why compare 100% of your life to 10% of someone else’s?” Instagram is a highlight reel, not real life.

5. Hold onto your identity…

We don’t cease being US, after becoming a Mum or a Carer…right? So it’s important to remember and be true to who you were before the huge change in life. Think back… what did you like doing pre kids? What hobbies did you have? What books did you read? What got you all fired up and passionate? DO IT. LOTS OF IT! One day our children will fly the nest so if we have no sense of us, then what?

(Ok… I know I said I’d give you 5 tips but this one couldn’t be left out!)

6. Find your tribe…

Motherhood and parenting in general can be a really isolating experience for some people. From being stuck at home with a baby all day to caring for a sick child or giving up employment (and the associated social outlet) to raise a family. The thing is… we are social beings by design. It is natural for us to crave companionship, we thrive on it! It’s so SO important to have a tribe of women around you on this journey to support you, listen to you vent, help you and pick you up when you’re at rock bottom. What to remember here? BE SELECTIVE! Quality over quantity. You need women who will leave you feeling happy, connected and EMPOWERED. No energy leeches required! Remember; “Your tribe affects your vibe!”

So, what do you think? How will this help you improve YOUR life? Do you already have self-care down pat? What do you love doing to look after yourself? Leave me a comment below, I’d love to hear from you!
